The Three Peaks Challenge is one of the most popular trekking challenges in the UK. As simple as the name, the challenge involves climbing the three highest mountains of the United Kingdom - Scotland, England and Wales, often within 24 hours, 48 hours or 3 days.

It is estimated up to 30,000 people undertake the Three Peaks Challenge every year. This popularity has also led to the need to tackle the peaks in a way that is responsible. It's vital we walkers be considerate of the fragile ecosystems on the mountains and the communities that live around them. If you are from the UK, you will understand that for obvious reasons the challenge is usually undertaken in the summer months, between May & September. But the British weather likes to keep us on our toes, so be prepared for all conditions.

The National 3 Peaks Challenge is often completed to raise money for a chosen charity but is also done for fun, as well as the sense of accomplishment that comes from summiting the mountains. But in the spirit of fun - it is by no means an easy feat. Walkers, hikers & adventurers alike need to prepare for a fast-paced and physically demanding adventure when taking on the peaks. It is considered one of the most challenging physical challenges in the United Kingdom.

Having said this, do not be put off.. You can reach all three summits without being a ‘mountaineer’ as such, however, preparation is key. The terrain on these peaks was made by mother nature herself, it is varied and technical. Mountain weather can also be extreme, and its severity can take even experienced walkers by surprise. It's wise to choose a route to the top of each peak that best suits your skill & ability.

So, to understand the magnitude of the challenge, let's put that all into cold, hard statistics -

The Numbers;

Total walking distance is around 23 miles (37 km)
The total ascent is around 3064 meters (10,052ft)
Total driving distance is around 462 miles

Snowdon, in Wales (1085m)
Scafell Pike, in England (978m)
Ben Nevis, in Scotland (1345m)

The challenge starts with the most demanding of the 3 peaks - Scotland’s Ben Nevis. It is the highest mountain in the scenic hills of Scotland, the summit sits at 1,345 metres (4,413 ft) above sea level. But not only Scotland, Ben Nevis is the highest peak in the United Kingdom & the British Isles.

The second peak of the Three Peaks Challenge is Scafell Pike; the highest mountain in England at 3,209 ft. above sea level. Situated in the simply beautiful area of the Lake District, hopefully the views can help you reset and recharge from Ben Nevis ready for your next ascent. Despite being the lowest summit of all three peaks, it is arguably one of the hardest; with a rocky steep ascent.

Finally, you will reach Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, standing tall at 3,560 ft. above sea level. The name Snowdon means ‘snow hill’ and snow can often be seen covering parts of the mountain. The views from the summit are some of the best across the UK, simply spectacular.
